Southwell starts outside. The cedar-clad exterior sets an expectation that the interior has to answer. You can’t put white lacquer cabinets in a house that looks like this. So Forma didn’t. The cabinetry throughout uses a warm, natural wood grain with genuine character, the kind of finish that reads handsome rather than flashy.
The kitchen keeps the palette grounded: white cabinetry for the perimeter, a dark walnut range hood that pulls the warmth of the exterior inside, and matte black fixtures. The pendant lighting. Bold, angular, distinctly mid-century. Suits the character of the space exactly.
The Southwell project is a four-space whole-home cabinetry commission completed for a residential client in North York, Ontario. The project covered the main kitchen, a walk-in closet, and two bathroom vanities. Four spaces that needed to answer the character of the house itself — a cedar-clad exterior that set an expectation of warmth and considered material choices that the interior cabinetry had to live up to, not merely reference.
The kitchen starts with the tension between the two tones. Natural wood grain cabinetry runs the island and lower perimeter, white cabinetry fills the upper perimeter, and a walnut-toned hood surround anchors the transition between the two. The wood grain used throughout is not uniform or repeating — it has depth and variation, closer in character to solid wood than to a film applied to a flat surface. Against white quartz countertops and white uppers, the grain provides warmth without overwhelming the kitchen. The combination is resolved rather than contrasted: the two tones coexist because they were chosen to work together, not to compete.
Upper cabinets on the refrigerator wall run to ceiling height. Above the window run, FORMA installed a floating shelf configuration rather than full-height cabinets, preserving the light that enters from the west and making the kitchen feel taller and more open during the afternoon. The integrated appliance wall conceals the refrigerator and oven column behind matching fronts, so the perimeter reads as continuous from the doorway.
The walk-in closet picks up the same natural wood grain tone from the kitchen, connecting the two levels of the house through a material that appears in each at a different scale. The closet was designed around the specific wardrobe and storage habits of the clients — hanging sections at the correct heights for different garment lengths, drawer configurations laid out for how the space would be used morning and evening, shelving calibrated for bags and shoes rather than left as generic open storage.
Both bathroom vanities use the same natural wood tone with white stone tops and minimal hardware, consistent with the kitchen palette.
